The Breeders Hands

“Several times a day, literally more than I can count, I scoop up a puppy for the 101st time.
Not because they’re crying.
Not because something is wrong.
Not because they “need” fixing.
But because this is training.
These cuddles are intentional.

Most people think socialization is about meeting people, going places, and seeing new things. And yes that matters. But what really shapes a dog is how their nervous system learns to respond to the world.

Every time I pick one up, I’m teaching their body and brain:

  • Humans are safe
  • Being held is normal
  • Touch is regulating, not scary
  • Calm can exist inside excitement
  • Stress doesn’t have to mean panic

I hold them when they’re sleepy.
I hold them when they’re playful.
I hold them when it’s quiet.
I hold them when there’s noise, movement, and chaos around us.

Why?
Because life won’t always be calm.

One day, this puppy will:

  • Go to the vet
  • Meet kids who hug too tight
  • Be handled by groomers
  • Be lifted by new arms
  • Experience loud places and new smells
  • Need comfort when things feel confusing

And in those moments, I don’t want their first experience of being held to be fear.
I want their body to already know:
“This is familiar. This is safe. I can relax here.”

This is how confident dogs are made — not by accident, not by luck, not by hoping it works out.
But by thousands of tiny moments:

  • Being picked up gently
  • Being set down calmly
  • Being touched kindly
  • Being held when nothing is “wrong”

I snuggle a puppy a hundred times a day.
And every single time, I’m not just cuddling a puppy.
I’m building a dog who trusts humans.
A dog who can handle the world.
A dog who feels safe in someone else’s arms because it felt safe in mine first.”
